Myofascial therapy is a type of bodywork that focuses on the connective tissue (fascia) of the body to promote structural balance, functional performance, flexibility, and neurosomatic awareness. Fascia surrounds every muscle, every muscle fiber, blood vessels, organs, and nerves, binding some structures together while letting others to slide smoothly over each other.
Fascia is designed to be elastic and move freely with muscles and bones. Injury, stress, work-related repetitive movements and the effects of aging can cause fascia to lose its elasticity and become shorter, tighter, and more dense. Tightened fascia pulls our muscles and skeleton out of proper alignment and posture, which can cause pain, discomfort, and fatigue. Myofascial therapy works to lengthen, stretch, and soften this tissue to restore postural balance, ease of movement, and a feeling of being more at home - in your own body. This type of treatment is most effective when delivered in a series of sessions that focus on both full-body treatment as well as region-specific concerns.
All techniques are delivered slowly, allowing the connective tissue to adjust to the applied pressure, increasing enough heat to create a thixotropic effect that will have long-lasting benefits. A modest amount of lubricant is used to increase heat potential at the dermal and fascial levels while decreasing any skin irritation. Myofascial Treatment is not a passive massage. You periodically perform small movements at specific joints to mobilize muscle fibers and, thus, enhance treatment effects. After completing work on one side of your body, you will have the opportunity to get up from the table in order to stand and walk in gravity. This kinesthetic feedback allows you to assess the effects of the work; it also heightens your awareness of how your body can feel.
